C-720 Advanced Clinical Reasoning = 21 hours

Advanced and efficient levels of clinical reasoning are vital to a clinician’s ability to manage the complex, integrated patient presentations. This course forms the foundation for and/or builds on, and reinforces, concepts and materials presented in the advanced NAIOMT 705, 715 and 725 courses. It uses case-based presentations to enhance the physical therapist’s ability to efficiently, safely and accurately formulate “trilingual” diagnoses to recognize pain phenotypes, neuromusculoskeletal impairments and potential co-existing pathoanatomical diagnoses. This process facilitates the development of a comprehensive and contemporary manual therapy-based management plan.

Participants will be exposed to the advanced science of clinical reasoning and develop the ability to discuss the “fast and slow” decision making, achieving a superior understanding of the optimal conditions for each approach. This will stream-line the assessment of the total person and facilitate optimal management and outcomes.

Manual Therapy for the Sports Physical Therapist = 14 hours

This comprehensive, clinically based course focuses on manual therapy and exercise for sports rehabilitation of the upper and lower extremities. Participants will gain confidence in diagnosing various sports injuries, understand loads on the body, and appreciate the anatomy and function of different structures. The hands-on training emphasizes subjective and objective assessments and the design of tailored rehabilitation and in-season manual therapy programs for common upper and lower limb sports injuries, all backed by the latest research. Pelvic Health Implications for the Running Athlete = 15 hours

Running is a complex biomechanical process which can be derailed by pelvic floor dysfunction. Conversely, the impact of running can result in pelvic floor dysfunction and injury to the pelvic floor muscles. Runners have unique physical, nutritional, and psychological needs that require special attention from pelvic floor physical therapists. Additionally, runners often present to orthopedic specialists with knee and hip injuries that do not resolve as expected due to the presence of pelvic floor impairments that are missed by orthopedic physical therapists. Pelvic floor practitioners can provide necessary physical therapy treatment to address issues for runners and work in tandem with orthopedic colleagues for optimal rehabilitation of runners with pelvic floor dysfunction.

Dry Needling (DN) is a powerful adjunctive tool for the orthopaedic manual physical therapist. C-426 The Functional Shoulder Girdle for Occupational Therapists = 21 hours

C-725 Advanced Spinal Manipulation = 56 hours

This course will utilize case-based instruction to develop advanced evidence-informed spinal manipulation/thrust skills within a comprehensive and contemporary manual physical therapy approach to specific health condition scripts of the lumbar spine, thoraco-lumbar junction, and pelvic girdle regions. Complex, multi-region patient/client impairments of the neuromusculo-skeletal system will be analyzed in an instructor-specific methodology, based on the various models available for regional and segmental motion and function, load transfer and control impairment (relative increase or decrease in mobility and control), including original, and novel, thoughts, and theory. Management will focus on a multi-faceted approach integrating the functional needs of and in collaboration with the patient/client. Total management integrates neurophysiological and biomechanical-based manipulation techniques, integration of pain and health sciences, neuromuscular re-education, sensorimotor integration, adjunct interventions and individualized skilled prescription of therapeutic activities and exercise.

Focus of course: To facilitate an independent course, but also retain the concepts of regional inter-dependence, the faculty will primarily focus on the following regions in this class.

UQ – Advanced assessment and focused spinal manipulation within an integrated manual physical therapy approach to low risk and to complex, moderate risk impairments of the thoraco-lumbar junction (T9-L2), lumbar spine, pelvic girdle, and sacro-iliac joints (SIJ).

LQ – Advanced assessment and focused spinal manipulation within an integrated manual physical therapy approach to low risk and to complex, moderate risk impairments of the upper, middle, lower cervical spine, cervico-thoracic junction, thoracic spine and ribs (1-9)

S-910 Lower Quadrant Dry Needling = 23.5 hours

Dry Needling (DN) is a powerful, adjunctive tool for the orthopaedic manual physical therapist. This course is designed to bridge the gap between DN theory to how this tool can be integrated into clinical practice seamlessly by presenting a case based approach to DN with an emphasis on clinical reasoning in order to provide first time exposure and education to clinicians on DN as well as review and improve effective technique with clinicians currently utilizing DN.

Participants will cover the most commonly implicated muscles involved with frequently encountered lower quadrant musculoskeletal dysfunctions. With concerns about complications from the invasive nature of dry needling, ample amount of lab time will be spent on surface anatomy and palpation to ensure accurate location of relevant regional anatomy and safety of technique.

S-921 Advanced Concepts for the Overhead Athlete = 14 hours

Overhead athletes require special characteristics to allow them the mobility and stability to perform their sport. There are considerable anatomical and biomechanical kinetic chain concepts that professionals must understand to treat these athletes appropriately. The normal upper quarter function is dependent on controlled and sequenced motion of all its component parts. Additionally, in overhead sports, coordination from the lower quarter plays a major role in setting up the upper quarter to perform properly.

In this course, you will learn anatomical and biomechanical considerations of the entire kinetic chain in detail, along with extensive lab time for mastering evaluation and treatment skills. This course will utilize case-based instruction to illustrate specific health condition scripts of the integrated lower quadrant and the decision-making process inherent to their total management. Designed to develop intermediate to advanced clinical reasoning skills in utilizing a comprehensive and contemporary manual physical therapy approach, participants will develop the skills necessary to necessary to construct detailed exploration of the etiology of presenting signs and symptoms. Dry Needling (DN) is a powerful, adjunctive tool for the orthopaedic manual physical therapist. Overhead athletes require special characteristics to allow them the mobility and stability to perform their sport. There are considerable anatomical and biomechanical kinetic chain concepts that professionals must understand to treat these athletes appropriately. The normal upper quarter function is dependent on controlled and sequenced motion of all its component parts. Additionally, in overhead sports, coordination from the lower quarter plays a major role in setting up the upper quarter to perform properly.

This course focuses on cardio-pulmonary conditions and their influence on OMPT.  Participants will be exposed to online learning experiences that will develop their skill and abilities in dealing with patients with cardio-pulmonary conditions – their definitions, causes and management.  In particular, participants will develop skills in recognizing patients presenting with cardio-pulmonary conditions, the parameters of presentation, and understanding its effects on the individual physical therapy patient/ client evaluation, diagnosis, management and prognosis.  Participants will be expected to recognize when a cardio-pulmonary condition is a red flag or needs referral to physicians and specialists and to be able to make management decisions that are in the best interest of the patient/client.  This course is for licensed physical therapists who are intermediate to advanced learners in the field of orthopedic manual physical therapy.
