S-916 Advanced Dry Needling = 16 hours

Pre-requisites: S-910 Lower Quadrant and S-911 Upper Quadrant Dry Needling. Clinicians must be cognizant of their individual state’s practice act as whether Dry Needling is considered within the scope of practice of physical therapists in their respective state. There may also be licensure requirements of a specific number of years in practice before receiving dry needling training or a specific number of hours of training before implementing Dry Needling into clinical practice.

Course Description: Dry Needling (DN) is a powerful, adjunctive tool for the orthopaedic manual physical therapist. However, when not placed in the context of a thorough subjective history, a comprehensive neuromusculoskeletal examination, and appropriate differential diagnosis, it can be challenging to accurately identify the most appropriate patients and achieve optimal patient outcomes. This course is designed to bridge the gap between DN theory to how this tool can be integrated into clinical practice seamlessly by presenting a case based approach to DN with an emphasis on clinical reasoning in order to provide first time exposure and education to clinicians on DN as well as review and improve effective technique with clinicians currently utilizing DN. Participants will cover the most commonly implicated muscles involved with frequently encountered thoracic, craniofacial and lumbar musculoskeletal dysfunctions. With concerns about complications from the invasive nature of dry needling, ample amount of lab time will be spent on surface anatomy and palpation to ensure accurate location of relevant regional anatomy and safety of technique.

COMT-4: Upper Extremity – Integrated Concepts and Modern Management

This is the fourth course in a series of five courses in the COMT certification series. This course is case based addressing patho-anatomy, and clinical recognition patterns of the cervical spine. Clinical presentation of each condition is highlighted and organization of knowledge is taught so that an OT may arrive at a sound clinical impression of the cervical spine as a potential pain generator of the upper quadrant. The OT based on the information from the examination may choose to treat the patient or refer to a physical therapist.

Overhead athletes require special characteristics to allow them the mobility and stability to perform their sport. There are considerable anatomical and biomechanical kinetic chain concepts that professionals must understand to treat these athletes appropriately. Pelvic Health Implications for the Running Athlete = 15 hours

Running is a complex biomechanical process which can be derailed by pelvic floor dysfunction. Conversely, the impact of running can result in pelvic floor dysfunction and injury to the pelvic floor muscles. Runners have unique physical, nutritional, and psychological needs that require special attention from pelvic floor physical therapists. Additionally, runners often present to orthopedic specialists with knee and hip injuries that do not resolve as expected due to the presence of pelvic floor impairments that are missed by orthopedic physical therapists. This course offers advanced clinical reasoning skills, developing skills to move beyond an initial patho-anatomical hypothesis toward a detailed exploration of the etiology behind the diagnosis in upper quadrant patient presentations. Complex, multi-region patient/client problems of the neuromusculoskeletal system will be analyzed in an instructor specific methodology, based methodology. Management will focus on a multi-faceted approach encompassing manual therapy, neurophysiological techniques, and various other management approaches.

Advanced and efficient levels of clinical reasoning are vital to a clinician’s ability to manage the complex, integrated patient presentations. This course forms the foundation for and/or builds on, and reinforces, concepts and materials presented in the advanced NAIOMT 705, 715 and 725 courses.
