NAIOMT COMT-1: Lumbar Spine

This is the first course in a series of 5 courses in the COMT certification.

This case-based, lab-focused course features human movement and high performing PT management of the lumbopelvic spine. Participants will refine an efficient lumbopelvic screening examination and analyze total lower quadrant gait and movement, incorporating the patient's health conditions, pain presentations, and relevant biopsychosocial factors. Mobility patterns of the lower quadrant system are studied, and the central and spinal neurophysiological factors determining normal and abnormal movement patterns. Management strategies include education, activity modification, manual therapy techniques, and individualized neuromuscular rehabilitation prescription, with the goal of restoring optimal function and preventing future health conditions and impairments. Participants will incorporate techniques into evidence-informed clinical practice guidelines for specific lower quadrant movement impairments and interpret relevant outcomes measures to guide treatment progression.

Michael Lucido

Dr. Lucido is a 1985 graduate from of University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas with a bachelor’s of science degree in physical therapy and received his transitional doctorate in physical therapy from A.T. Still’s University in Mesa, AZ in 2011. Michael has over 35 years of orthopedic/musculoskeletal physical therapy experience with clinical interest and specialization in spinal/quadrant dysfunction. His early instructors in manual therapy were Robin McKenzie, Freddie Kaltenborn, Erl Pettman, Cliff Fowler and Jim Meadows. Michael has has a passion for teaching and has instructed over the United States to physical therapist, occupational therapist and primary care physicians. Michael is board certified by the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties and has completed a fellowship in orthopedic manual/manipulative physical therapy thru the North American Institute of Orthopedic Manual Therapy (NAIOMT). He is a member of the North American Spine Society. He is a guest lecturer at Texas Woman’s University and is and instructor and examiner for NAIOMT. Michael is presently employed as senior physical therapist and education coordinator with by Baylor Scott & White Outpatient Services. He is married and has three children and lives in Dallas, TX.
