The North American Institute of Orthopedic Manual Therapy (NAIOMT) hosted its 2025 Clinical Symposium this June in Dallas, Texas. Attendees were treated to expert lectures covering a wide range of topics relevant to modern physical therapy practice. Interestinglyβand perhaps tellinglyβnot a single hands-on technique was taught, discussed, or practiced throughout the event.

This shift in focus reflects a growing conversation within the field. In a recent editorial published in the Journal of Manual and Manipulative Therapy, Lewis et al. raised a timely and thought-provoking premise: βWhile we can strongly recommend incorporating both exercise and manual therapy in the management of musculoskeletal pain, the clinical benefits of these interventions are often limited, falling short of patient expectations. This underscores the critical need to shift our focus: from merely treating symptoms to addressing the underlying factors that contribute to musculoskeletal conditions.β 1

NAIOMT is leading the way in integrating advanced musculoskeletal postgraduate education with essential factors such as general health and wellness. This yearβs Symposium exemplified that mission. The sessions explored topics such as regenerative medicine, nutrition, chronic pain management, and breathingβcritical areas that extend beyond exercise and manual therapy.
Vigorous discussion centered on how best to incorporate these concepts into physical therapy education and, ultimately, how doing so can positively impact patient functional outcomes. Each participant left the Symposium with an enhanced understanding of how to better educate patients on the benefits of a healthy lifestyle and how to support meaningful behavioral change.

If you are looking to enhance your physical therapy practice and stay at the forefront of emerging trends, we invite you to explore our programs.
