We often hear advertisements that foot pain can be cured with custom orthotics (shoe inserts). In fact, some organizations will go as far as to claim large amounts of success "curing" back pain by the same means. All the customer has to do is visit their trained foot specialist and bing-o, bang-o the pain is gone!
While this is partially true, do you know there is research that it can "travel" the other way too! In other words, back and hip problems can lead to foot pain or they can be entirely independent of one another.
The fix: see a professional who is trained to examine all areas and does not have a bias towards one region being the "key" to all our ills. See a physical therapist (PT)! You can visit www.apta.org to find your neighborhood PT or www.naiomt.com to locate a PT who SPECIALIZES in foot, knee, hip, and back pain.

NAIOMT's Chris Hoekstra Honored by Pacific University
Mt. Hood Community College and Pacific University have joined together again this year to acknowledge and honor the outstanding contributions that PTs and PTAs in the community make toward the education of our students. While we value the contribution of all of our clinical instructors, we again wish to recognize an individual for each program that has gone above and beyond the basic requirements.
Pacific University students and faculty are honored to present the Clinical Instructor of the Year Award to Chris Hoekstra, PT. Chris is the clinic director at Sherwood Physical Therapy.
Chris has been a clinical instructor for Pacific for many years. His clinic is in high demand as an internship site, and students always appreciate their time spent there. He is also an alumnus, so Pacific is very proud of him!
Students’ comments on Chris’ teaching skills include the following:
“Chris is a great clinician, but many people can be great clinicians. The trick (as a CI) is to be able to convert those clinical skills into an easily digestible format that students can comprehend.”
“My classmates are at a disadvantage because they did not get to have Chris as a CI!”
Congratulation Chris!
